Out of all my posts my most inquired item is my pink handbag. Thank you all, it’s Kate Spade 😉 Previously, I only thought neutral handbags were the way to go. I’m from a small old school southern city and was taught your handbag should be neutral so it goes with everything. The first time I branched out of the neutral zone was a metallic gold tote bag. It was purchased in 2008 and still gets used from time to time. However, gold is a neutral especially to me. Fast forward to 2 years ago, yes TWO years ago when I decided to step outside of the box and get a bright not so subtle handbag. At the time I was a manager at Juicy Couture (RIP) and we received a 50% off discount at Kate Spade so I thought this was the perfect time (and discount) to branch out of my comfort zone. Personally, I love structured bags as they are more polished imo and Kate Spade is majority structured handbags in a wide selection of colors, so Kate Spade it was! When I spotted this handbag it was love at first sight. I knew it was “the one” when I thought about it daily. True story. And the rest is POP of pink history!

At first I was hesitant about a pink handbag because Oh NO! what if it doesn’t go with my outfit of the day?!?! SN: I never change my bag out. I’m lazy/busy and just don’t like taking the 2 mins out to do it. Then you start leaving things in others bags and your whole life becomes a mess. IJS. … Back to the program … Then after I said, who cares, purchased and began our #ootd love affair I realized majority of my closet is neutrals or flow with pink.

But you came here to learn about how to elevate / update / upgrade your look all with one accessory, a handbag! Handbags to me are investment pieces because you wear/use them every. single. day. and they can completely enhance your look. If you are wearing a sweat suit ( a cute put together sweatsuit, not ratty sweats that you’ve accumulated from ex boyfriends but even then you’ll look somewhat like you have your life together, but still, no) your overall look with come across as polished.

The statement bag works great for me because I mostly wear classic pieces in neutral colors so my clothes aren’t competing for attention. You know the Coco Chanel quote, “before you leave the house take a look in the mirror and take one accessory off”? Well, same goes for statement pieces. If you are wearing a loud head to toe look your pieces are going to compete with one another and just be a lot to look at vs one amazing piece saying, YASSSS, I’m here and I’m Ah-Mazing!!!

This pink handbag stands out as much as it does because it’s canvas (my outfit) is typically a white top and denim. The canvas is what makes this bag look so great. If I wore this with a brightly colored print dress it would blend in, while you will still see it it won’t catch your eye the way it does against neutrals. See photo above for a perfect NO example. While it’s fun and vibrant the bag blends in with the bright graphic wall.

The same “rule” goes for neutral bags as well. I’m currently SWOONING over the LV Speedy Bandouliere bag. While it is neutral in color the outfits I picture it with, all black or a white button down and denim, it still POPS, it still stands out and is the center piece and focus.

If you love wearing bright colors and prints I would suggest a solid neutral bag with amazing shape and hardware. There is nothing that gives me heart eyes more than big obnoxious gold hardware on a solid neutral bag. Because your canvas is printed or colorful your neutral bag will not compete with your look and be seen as opposed to blending in. Please note: Monogram bags like Louis Vuitton classic monogram and the damier bags are prints and I do not suggest wearing similar bags with bright colored or printed outfits. This suggestion is subjective and determined by your level of styling. Are you entry level or professional?
