A RULE I CREATED TO BE MORE INTENTIONAL WITH MY PURCHASES TO HELP STRETCH MY SHOPPING BUDGET TO IT’S MAXIMUM CAPACITY
WHO ELSE HAS BOUGHT A NEW TOP BECAUSE YOU “LOVED IT SO MUCH” THEN MONTHS LATER IT STILL HASN’T BEEN WORN?
We’ve all been there! There has been a time in our life we’ve walked in our closet looking for something to wear only to be reminded of the items we purchased but still haven’t worn, tags still attached and all.
When we make impulse purchases we end up with a closet of one offs that we only have one other item to wear with it, if even that.
When we make impulse purchases we end up with a closet full of clothes yet still have NOTHING to wear. WHY are we like this?!
In 2013, after losing 20lbs, purging 90% of my closet and only having a clothing budget of $150 a month I was in desperate need of a high functioning wardrobe. That is when, why and how I created my #1 shopping rule, The Rule of 5.
I knew in order to still buy quality pieces I loved I was going to have to get creative (and disciplined) and that’s exactly what I did. Every single purchase I made for the following year was well thought out and 100% intentional. I had no room for impulse purchases, the function of my wardrobe couldn’t afford it.
I bet you don’t like throwing your money away, do you?
We all deserve to hit our financial goals (and best wardrobes) and a great starting point is to become more intentional with what we spend our money on.
I want you to be great in everything you do so I wrote a 24 page book to fully share The Rule of 5 with you. There’s even worksheets for you to brainstorm your goal wardrobe!

If you need more help building your wardrobe my e-book,Build Your Dream Wardrobe on a Budget is a great tool. The 12 steps I take when planning and shopping for my wardrobes each season is covered in detail with examples for you. These are the steps I take to ensure each purchase is intentional, it’s also the strategy I used to budget to purchase my first Louis Vuitton handbag. In fact, The Rule of 5 is one of the 12 steps in the e-book.
I’m going to start this with an apology, this jacket is sold out. SORRYYYY! I’ve heard things from my Instagram ladies that this has been spotted in store, one person was able to snag an online return. It’s possible is all I’m saying.
I love a good sherpa coat and wanted to dabble in the shacket trend so haven’t eying this one for a few weeks I finally took the plunge. I’m so happy I did because it does not disappoint! So far this season this is my most reached for coat but we’ve only had about 2 weeks of cold here.
I’ve found two pretty similar styles of this coat and linked them in each image and title in this post, just click!
I love this sweatshirt, it’s excellent quality. I love it so much I added it to my version of a Gift Guide aka “Julia’s Favorite Things” because it does make an excellent gift!
Size: runs TTS but I sized up for an oversized fit.
This is a style you’ll have for years and they work year around. These are the Curve Love fit from Abercrombie so they have room for hips and butts but also fit around the waist.
As far as Abercrombie Jeans go the only fit I can recommend is the Curve Love, their other jeans are not made for a pear body type.
I have linked something similar for you because this was is Zara and sold out. If you want a chic knit leisure set Zara has been ON IT this year, check them out and see what you can get into!
This is an Amazon score, you’ve probably seen this dress on Instagram cause other bloggers are catching on to it. There’s 5-10 colors, maybe more. The knit is a mid weight, doesn’t show every nook and cranny.
While the pair I’m wearing are from Nordstrom (2 years ago), I found the updated version from the same brand on Amazon. Legit, everything is on Amazon.
Issa Chanel dupe from Amazon! Pretty much this is an Amazon look minus the shacket. This bag is a dupe and not a replica, no where on it does it say Chanel. While I enjoy a dupe to find out if a designer style is for me or not I never purchase replicas.
This is another Amazon look. I’ve wanted a catsuit for years but never pulled the trigger cause I didn’t want all of my business out like all the young girls who would wear them to Lenox on the weekend *the shadddeee*.
But 2020 hit, I’m the healthiest, happiest and most confident in my body than I’ve ever been so I said F it, I’m adding this $20 Catsuit to my cart!
I purchased it not to wear alone with fur slides in the mall -_- but to wear under longer layering pieces like this shacket or a full length cardigan.
FIT: a lot of people have asked if this “snatches” and to that I say, “ma’am, this was $20 on Amazon” … of course it doesn’t snatch lol BUT it doesn’t highlight and cling to nooks and crannies like you may expect.
SIZE: TTS. I got my TTS, medium and I have room to “grow”
This is men’s … In the F/W I love to buy a couple of men’s hoodies up one or two sizes (large or xl). Men’s hoodies are longer than womens so you can do more with them, pair with leather leggings under a full length coat is a go-to for me.
I also love pairing them with oversized sweats or these camo pants. I’ve worn a version of this outfit to Target more times than I can count.
Another men’s item. This exact pair was thrifted but UO has them as well. FYI: the style at UO is called “renewed” which mean’s they’re second hand.
SIZE: this is a tough one because these are actual military pants. No two pairs are the same because they’re tailored to fit the original owner. The tags in a lot of them are gone or worn down so you can’t see the size.
I have no clue what the actual size is I’m wearing but I’d say a “large” under UO’s terms.
My favorite must have winter shoe. I mostly wear these to walk the dog or run errands which is my actual day to day life.
The mini UGG’s can look cool and chic, imho, when paired with an oversized sweatshirt and full length coat layered over. Or leather leggings, oversized sweater and full length wool coat. Once it gets cold cold I think most people just want to be cozy and warm and these do that.
SIZE: UGG boots are only made in full sizes so if you’re a half, size down.

One of the best items I purchased this year is the denim slouchy jeans, I wore them a few days a week so I knew purchasing this black pair would be a good idea and I was right. I thought the black would flow into my Fall Winter wardrobe.
The reason I love the slouchy jeans so much is because they’re low key sweatpants that look a little more polished. They’re also perfect to pair with bodysuits and crop tops, the high waist and fullness of the pants give the illusion of a slimmer waist.
In addition to be comfortable and flattering they’re also pretty affordable. Denim is an investment item for me but when trying a trend I’ll usually try out a more affordable option. These are in the $60 range and proper denim quality, for the price point the quality is really good.
The sizing on these are kind of tough as they are only made in every other size. I tried one size up in the regular length and one size up in the petite as my size (29) isn’t made. The regular length was HUGE while the petite fit perfect. I have to guess going a size down will be a safe bet if your size isn’t available.
I’m all about the bodysuits these days, seamless are my favorites and this Everlane style is perfect. The elbow length sleeves make it perfect for Fall transitional weather. Runs TTS.

You’ve probably seen the 1995, 1996 year range necklaces trending. I think they’re super cool with a little edge so I added a version to my shop. I was decided to be bold and YOLO it with my birth year. You can get 1-4 digits, it doesn’t have to be a year or 4 digit number.
This was a complete impulse purchase and I regret nothing! Nothing at all! On trend, classic, chic and comfortable at the same time. I sized up for an oversized fit, def could have gone two sizes up but this works too.

A good classic sneaker. I bought these last season as my staple shoe and they’re still in rotation this year. Runs TTS. Puma is a shoe you have to break in with a wear or two.
All the 90’s vibes with this cuban link name necklace. This is hands down my favorite necklace of the moment. It’s available in 18kt gold or sterling silver.
One of my favorite affordable purchases of this Summer is the crop halter neck tank. I have it in both white and black. My exact style is sold out so I linked a very similar option. Runs TTS.

It took me a Summer or two to finally get these Zara slides as I don’t normally wear slides. Now that I have them I know I should have gotten them sooner. These are my most worn sandals this Summer, hands down!
Some people say to size up but my TTS fits perfect. They are leather so they will stretch out a bit.
A long time favorite and best seller from my shop is the Carrie Name Necklace. It’s such a staple item, I’ve had mine 6+ years in the 18kt Gold Dipped shown here on a 14″ chain. I just purchased the 14kt Solid Gold on a 16″ chain.
Carrie is available in sterling silver, rose gold dipped and solid white gold as well.
The shouder pad trend is everywhere this year and when I saw this crop cinched version for $12 I jumped on it. Comes in 3 colors, runs TTS. Go up a size if you want some length.

This are hands down my favorite sandals, they are an investment item but 100% worth it if you love a good sandal. Go up a half size from your normal size.
Have you hopped on the bum bag trend? At the beginning of Spring I bought a cute inexpensive one from Target, I wore it so much I gave myself permission to invest in this MCM version.
This is the small. It fits about the same amount of items as my LV Alma bb.

INFO: the skirt I’m wearing is old from Zara aka sold out so I linked a similar option for you. Based on images and product description the skirt linked is very very similar, same fabric, cut, ribbing and weight.
SIZING/FIT: TTS, wider fit but not an actual wide if that makes sense. Very comfortable but had to be broken in with a couple of wears.
QUALITY: I’ve had this pair of sneakers a little over a year and wear them at least once a week. When I first got them I wore them closet to 5 times a week, not kidding. With the help of Folex cleaner they still look brand new.
INFO: My tank is sold out. It’s TopShop via Nordstrom. I linked a very similar option from Abercrombie, I’ve been loving and stocking up on their basics lately.
SIZING/FIT: This one is a toughy as these are old military pants so each one fits a little different depending if they had any alterations, shrinkage, etc. With that being said I went up a size to a large for a baggy fit.
QUALITY: Like I said these are someones old pants so you may get a barely worn pair or one with holes, it’s a toss up.
SIZING/FIT: I find this top runs TTS however, if you want a little more length or don’t want a snug fit on your stomach go up a size. The band at the waist is made to “squeeze” the waist to give a cinched looked.
QUALITY: For $12 this is excellent quality, HA! Overall, it is good quality.
SIZING/FIT: This is a difficult one because these only come in every other size and that’s even sizes. I’m an odd size, 29 so these aren’t made in my size. They also come in varying lengths. In addition, while my waist needs a 29 my hips/butt can easily do a 30.
When I purchased my first pair the regular sizing didn’t have the length I needed (I’m 5’4″ with short legs) the only length available was fairly long. These also come in petite and the length on those seemed the perfect length for my legs. So I ordered a 30 Regular and 30 Petite.
The regular’s were HUGGEEEE, in the waist, butt, thighs and length. There was no way those were working for me but the petite’s fit perfect. The petite fits perfect in the waist, butt and length.
I’d have to assume if I kept the regular length a size down would have fit best but idk because I haven’t tried them.
& That concludes why I can’t give you a straight answer, I’m sorry!
QUALITY: Great for a random pair of jeans. I’m very particular about my jeans and almost never go off course wtbs, I Love them, recommend! I wear this pair or my denim a few days a week. Hands down my best purchase of 2020.
SIZING/FIT: go half size up, not your normal half up but a real half up. I’m an 8 – 8.5 and got a 9. They fit perfect in length but do run a little wide, the straps and adjustable to tighten them up so they fit great. These are leather so the straps stretch with wear as well.
QUALITY: Excellent! I’ve had these 2 Summers and they still look new. These are hands down my favorite sandals, highly recommend!
SIZING/FIT: runs TTS, made to be oversized/slouchy
QUALITY: Love this crop hoodie! It actually has a drawstring at the waist so you can tighten it to wear it cropped, loosen it to fit longer or undo the drawstring all together for a trapeze like look.
In todays video and in all photos I’m wearing the newest necklace added to my shop, shopjuliamarie.com, the CHUNKY NAME NECKLACE. It has a chunky Gourmette Chain close to the same width as the nameplate making it a great statement piece. It is absolutely my favorite of the moment! It comes in both gold or silver and you can have it made in any chain length between 14″ and 20″. Mine is on a 16″ chain which is the most popular length.

Graphic Band Tees are all the rage, there are some really great ( & pricey ) ones available. Because I don’t wear t-shirts or prints I didn’t go the $$$ route and went the $ instead. I found this tee in the Men’s section at Target for $12. This way I can dip my toe into the band tee trend before seeing if I want to dive in.
LOOK ONE
GRAPHIC TEE: I picked this up in the men’s department at Target, I sized up to an XL for an oversized look. I wanted to lounge in the top and tie it up.
DENIM JACKET: My denim jacket is 15 years old from Ralph Lauren. I linked a really great classic denim jacket from Madewell, it fits TTS.
SKIRT: This skirt is an oldie I keep around for styling videos. I linked a similar one for you. I sized down to get a true body con look.
SNEAKERS: I bought these last Summer for my F/W white sneaker. It’s a structured classic silhouette. Runs TTS
ANKLET: I found this cankle friendly anklet on Amazon! There’s 5 different styles and a variety of sizes that include small and regular sized ankles. Measure your ankle with a tape measure to determine what length you need.
LOOK TWO
SHIRT: I picked this up in the men’s department at Target, I sized up to an XL for an oversized look. I wanted to lounge in the top and tie it up.
JEANS: these are one of my favorite purchases this Spring/Summer. They are very high waisted with an oversized slouchy leg. The sizing on the are touch because they have 4 different pant lengths and sizes are in and out of stock. I bought 2 pairs a size up from my TTS in both the regular and petite.
I kept the petite, they fit perfect but after a few wears stretch out quite a bit. The regular length in one size up were massive, insanely big.
Because these are meant to be oversized it’s possible your TTS, one size up or one size down will work for you. I always suggest buying multiple sizes and return the ones that don’t work when ordering denim online. I always buy multiple pairs and return the pairs that don’t work.
SANDALS: These were a really great $20 find on Amazon, they sold out a few days later. I did find a very similar to link for you.
SUNGLASSES: I really want the Quay Aviators but the colorway I want is sold out so I found these on Amazon to hold me over. I recommend these and they’re half the price.
GLASSES CHAIN: Chanel has a pair of sunglasses with an obnoxious chain that I’m obsessed with. I didn’t see $500 in my sunglass budget so I found this $6 option on Amazon to get a similar look.
CHAIN FOR LV LOCKET NECKLACE: I’ve seen this necklace as a DIY being sold on ETSY for $120 ish. I said to self, “Self, you already have the LV locket, just find a chain and DIY it yourself”. So, I went to Amazon and did just that.
LOOK THREE
GRAPHIC TEE: I picked this up in the men’s department at Target, I sized up to an XL for an oversized look. I wanted to lounge in the top and tie it up.
JEANS: These were a purchase I made earlier in the year. They are the Levi’s Ribcage, I did size up. I cut them to the length I needed.
SHOES: I bought these 2 years ago, I linked this seasons version. Very sturdy, easy to walk in and TTS.
SUNGLASSES: I really want the Quay Aviators but the colorway I want is sold out so I found these on Amazon to hold me over. I recommend these and they’re half the price.

LOOK FOUR
GRAPHIC TEE: I picked this up in the men’s department at Target, I sized up to an XL for an oversized look. I wanted to lounge in the top and tie it up.
CAMO PANTS: These are old military pants I thrifted. I feel like most thrift stores will have a least one pair in them. Sizing is weird because they’re men’s military pants, I just yolo’d it, purchased a pair and hoped for the best.
SNEAKERS: This is my second pair of this style sneaker so it’s clear I recommend them. TTS.
NAME NECKLACE: This is a piece from my shop, shopjuliamarie.com It is my current daily go-to. I wear mine on a 16″ chain.

5 WAYS TO WEAR A SLIP DRESS
Slip dresses are not only on trend right now but they’re easy and comfortable to wear and style. I know a lot of us are spending more time at home this season and a slip dress is perfect to wear around the home as well.
Personally, I prefer all casual everything and a slip dress is no exception. Flat sandals or sneakers is always my go-to but if you’re more of a dressy lady and love your heels this is absolutely a style that is perfect for your favorite stiletto’s.
The most popular lengths for slip dresses are right at the knee/slightly below or a midi length. Midi Length is always a favorite length for me, something about it is “sexy” (I never use that word haha), chic and fashion forward. Because of my height and sexy cankles 😉 it’s not always the most flattering length for me so I tend to go for body skimming silhouettes.
SIMILAR HANDBAG: My handbag was purchased last Summer from Amazon, it is a designer dupe so they sell very fast and/or the listings are taken down. I was unable to find the exact bag I have but found a similar Hermes inspired PVC bag and linked it for you. I searched Clear PVC handbag and have the Large size if you are able to locate this bag. Mine does have a crossbody strap and it’s the perfect length for me, I’m 5’4″.
SNEAKERS: These were my F/W 2019/2020 white sneakers. I wore these 5 days a week this past season and love them for leather leggings and oversized sweaters, they’re great to pair with dresses too. The run TTS.
LOOK TWO
SUNGLASS CHAIN: I was inspired by a pair of Chanel sunglasses I saw in Nordstrom then Emily Ann Gemma had a similar look and said she got her chain from Forever 21. I thought to self, “Self, Amazon has to have them”. So I went to Amazon and here we are. This $6 accessory makes a fun subtle yet statement.
CLUTCH: A Summer 2020 purchase, the quality of this MCM clutch is amazing and completely elevates a simple look.
SANDALS: If you preordered these you know they were a pain to get, since then they’re fully in stock and ready to be shipped. They come in a few color options. The shoe itself is okay quality, they’re not leather so they won’t “break-in” like a leather shoe. However, the stud detailing is the best quality I’ve seen on a sandal thus far besides the actual Valentino Rockstud, the studs are absolutely where they put the money in on this shoe so that made them worth it to me. The width of the shoe is on the narrower side, I think I have average width feet and they are snug but maybe I have average-wide feet, who knows?!
LOOK THREE
HAT: I have a child size head therefore have the hardest time finding a hat that fits my bean head and this one does! I think this hat is for small to medium size heads but I’m not a head expert and don’t actually know anything about head sizes and what’s average or not.
SIMILAR JACKET: The only denim jacket I own, mostly because I don’t wear jackets. This was purchased 15 years ago, it’s Ralph Lauren.

SHIRT: This was a quarantine purchase. This style sells out fast but does get restocked occasionally. I’m not a t-shirt wearer but I had to have this one. It’s super soft and great quality, it’s perfect to throw on with biker shorts or sweats. I wear it with high waist jeans tied up for a sassy look.
SNEAKERS: These were purchases as my S/S 2020 white sneaker. The past few white sneakers I bought had a stronger classic silhouette so I wanted to go with a running sneaker silhouette to switch things up. I have the sneaker in a hot pink too that have become my gym sneakers, both are very comfortable and run TTS.
In todays video I’m wearing the Best Selling classic, Carrie Name Necklace from my shop, shopjulimarie.com. It has been the #1 popular piece the past 5 years. I have 3 of them in different sizes and chain lengths. Lately (and shown here) I’m wearing the Classic Carrie Name Necklace in gold on a 14″ Chain.

TOP: A new purchase for this season, I bought my TTS in both white (to wear with denim) and black (to wear to the gym). The top is very cropped, the waist of these pants come right above the belly button to give you an idea of the length of the shirt.
SANDALS: went half size up. These are a new style for this Spring/Summer. You know I love my gold and I’m always down for a good stud. These add some razzle dazzle to an otherwise basic slide-on sandal.
LOOK 2
BODYSUIT: This bodysuit is a MUST HAVE! I bought it in the nude and white in my TTS. The fabric is very stretchy and comfortable, I’d consider ordering a size up for length purposes if you’re tall or have a long torso (I’m 5’4″). It is a thong, I have not experienced any discomfort but than again I’m exclusively a thong girl.
SANDALS: I purchased these last year and wore them at least 4 days a week, they still look brand new going into this season. They are a bit of a splurge for a sandal but I’m from the south and wear sandals 6-9 months out of the year so I’m down to splurge on a good sandal. Order half size up.
HANDBAG: This PVC handbag I scored last Summer on Amazon. Turns out it’s an Hermes dupe so if you can catch it, purchase it ASAP because it’ll get taken down. The quality for a plastic bag lol is excellent, it comes with a long shoulder strap that you can wear crossbody. I have the Large size.
LOOK 3
SWEATSHIRT: Cue 8th grade Julia because that’s how old this sweatshirt is. I have no idea how this hoodie made it through 20+ years of purging. I mean, it hasn’t gotten purged over the last 10 years because it’s a legit vintage top that has been distressed with love over the years. That includes bleach marks on the kangaroo pocket from cleaning my first college apartment.
SNEAKERS: Puma for the win!! I have this balenciaga inspired Puma sneaker in neon pink and bought this white pair for my S/S white sneaker. I usually do a structured sneaker for my seasonal white sneakers but decided to mix it up with these runners.
BOOKBAG: A birthday gift to myself last year, this was my go-to handbag last Summer. I connected the straps so that I was able to wear it crossbody, inspired by the Louis Vuitton Palm Springs. This shade of pink has been discontinued but you can usually catch a seasonal shade of pink each Summer.
LOOK 4
HAT: If you have a small head, this is for you! Legit, I have a childs size head and can never find a hat to fit my dome but this fits perfect. I just bought this from a Corona sale, there’s 5 different colorways if white isn’t for you.
BODYSUIT: A basic, new purchase. It’s a thong, runs TTS. It’s not the best quality, It’s not bad either … it does do the job. Expect a basic T-shirt material you’d find in the juniors section at Target.
SANDALS: These were my one must have sandals this season. They run narrow and TTS, come in 5-ish colors. The studs are the best quality on an affordable sandal I’ve ever found. They are not leather so they won’t stretch to fit your foot however, if you need to widen them they will stretch with the assistance of a shoe stretcher.
BELT BAG: Another must have new purchase. I’m moving (in 10 days) to a highly walkable area and this was on my “need” list. The cut and gold hardware makes this chic and on trend while the nylon fabric keeps it casual (& waterproof -ish).
LOOK 5
VISOR: Another seasonal trend must have for me! Last Summer I was diagnosed with Melasma so I needed to bulk up my Summer hat collection this season to help protect my face. This hat is super fun, cute and serves a purpose. At $12 it’s an easily justified buy for poolside lounging, beach trips or back yard bbq’s.
SANDALS: If you like subtle chic this YSL inspired slides are for you. Some people claim they’re uncomfortable, I suggest sizing up for comfort. These are leather so they will mold to your foot with wear.
